ABOUT

Colour is an integral part of our daily lives, influencing the way we perceive and interpret the world around us. Yet, our understanding of colour is generally limited to colour theory taught in schools. Furthermore, it is often understood through the theories and practices of people with normal colour vision.

Hence, this project studies the meaning of colours in our local context by understanding the perspectives of individuals with colour vision deficiency, so as to widen the scope of my personal learning to include greater representation and the voices of those with a different experience of colour, in order to rethink the way colours are used, thought about, and learned.

Interviews were conducted with 8 individuals who have colour vision deficiency. These interviews were designed to understand their perception of colour, through the senses of taste, smell, sound, and touch. The information collected was used to create the outcomes of this project.

The first is a series of 11 publications, with each book containing the research and data collected about that colour.

The second outcome is a series of 10 textural sculptures that summarise the data collected from the touch-sensory aspect of the interviews. Each sculpture contains textures that were obtained from the Royal National Institute of Blind People (UK) and were translated into 3D.

The motion graphic here explains more about how the form of the sculptures were derived.
